LIDAR

Light Detection And Ranging use laser reflections from surfaces to create high definition maps with incredible clarity.  Unfortunately for me and many other motorist it can also detect the speed of traveling vehicles, but that is a different topic all together.  These images, like the one of the cityscape below are often taken from aircraft.
